What this question measures
This is a categorization item, and it is deliberately the easiest one on the test. Apple, banana and orange are fruits. Carrot is a root vegetable. The question is whether you can hold four items in mind at once and find the rule that separates one from the rest.
Categorization sounds trivial and it sits underneath a large amount of everyday thinking. Diagnosing a problem at work, sorting which emails matter, deciding which of five options belongs to a different class: all of it is the same operation running quietly.
The reason it is first is calibration. A test that opens with something hard makes people quit, and a score built only from difficult items tells you less than one that samples across the range.
How to improve categorical thinking
The skill improves with the size and organization of what you already know. You cannot spot the odd one out in a set of chemical compounds if you know nothing about chemistry, and no amount of general reasoning practice will fix that.
Which means the honest route to better categorization is a better organized memory. Facts stored in isolation do not connect to anything. Facts stored next to related facts form the categories you later reason with.
- When you learn something new, ask what it is a kind of before anything else
- Compare new facts to the nearest thing you already know
- Sort material into groups yourself rather than accepting the author’s grouping
- Notice when two things you thought were similar behave differently
